SUMMARY:Documentary: Rail Road to Rail Trail
DESCRIPTION:Rail Road to Rail Trail\n\n“Rail Road to Rail Trail\,” a new 30-minute documentary featuring the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail\, will be shown on Tuesday\, Feb. 23\, at 7 p.m. at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center\, 1276 Main St.\, in West Concord.\nFollowing the video\, producer Electa Tritsch and historian Henry Keutmann will discuss their experiences in making the video.\nThe video introduces viewers to both railroad history and present challenges of turning a defunct rail line into a 21st century transportation and recreation corridor. It is a lively presentation featuring interviews with local public officials and historians\, an animated map and a wealth of historical information and photographs.\nTritsch is a Concord resident who has been a practicing archeologist and historian for 30 years. She says it was fun exploring the trail and said “one of the main challenges was finding the story when you are talking about something that doesn’t exist.”\nShe was a 2014 national award winner from the Alliance for Community Media. She authored the historical novel “Old Wives Tales” and is a member of Concord’s Historical Commission.\nThe Bruce Freeman Rail Trail\, when complete\, will be an approximately 25-mile off-road trail from Lowell in the north to Framingham in the south. The first 6.8 miles in Chelmsford and Westford were opened in 2009. Construction is currently underway to extend the trail south another 5 miles through Acton. The next sections through Concord and Sudbury are currently being designed.\nThe meeting is sponsored by the Friends of BFRT\, and all are welcome. Audience members will also be able to ask questions about the status and progress of the rail trail. Light refreshments will be served.\n

SUMMARY:Nobscot Village Public Workshop
DESCRIPTION:FRAMINGHAM VILLAGE COMMERCIAL CENTERS\nSTRATEGIC ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PLANNING\nTown of Framingham\, Massachusetts \nThe Town of Framingham EDIC is undertaking a planning and market analysis study focused on a strategic economic development plan for the village commercial centers of Saxonville and Nobscot in North Framingham. The strategic economic development plan is focused on identifying actions that will lead to investment in both Saxonville and Nobscot. The study focuses on an area approximately one quarter mile from the main intersection of both village commercial centers. \nThis work is an implementation effort that was recommended in the Master Land Use Plan that was adopted by the Town in 2012. This study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of market forces and opportunities within each village commercial center and create an urban design vision to guide public sector decisions including zoning revisions\, public investment and engagement with private sector owners and developers. The strategic plan looks to answer three basic questions for Saxonville and Nobscot:\n•What should the village commercial center be?\n•How should it look?\n•How do we get there?\nThe Town of Framingham solicited requests for proposals for professional assistance by a land use planning\, economic development and urban design consultant to lead this effort. The Cecil Group\, a planning and design firm located in Boston\, was selected with their economic development subconsultant FXM Associates.\nThe consultant team will seek input from the community to better understand the issues and opportunities of the study areas and to identify a shared community vision for the village centers to help shape economic development strategies. This public outreach will include stakeholder interviews\, presentations at EDIC regular meetings\, and three public meetings in each village center.\nThe planning study is expected to be complete by the end of June 2015. The following schedule provides expected timeframes for key milestones in the planning process:\n•Initial Public Meetings- February 2015\n•Alternative Approaches Public Meetings- April 2015\n•Final Public Meetings- June 2015

SUMMARY:Bruce Freeman Rail Trail Phase 2A - Public Information Forum on Project Status
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday September 13\, 2014 MassDOT advertised Phase 2A for bid for construction. Estimated project cost is $9\,515\,000. Bids are due January 13\, 2015. Phase 2A is the 4.9 miles continuation of Phase 1 from Routes 225 and 27 in Westford\, south through Carlisle into Acton ending in East Acton at Teamworks. Given the January 2015 bid opening we expect construction start in spring 2015 and likely construction finish in late summer / fall 2016. Among other specifications\, the project includes 6 bridge refurbishments and one overpass over Great Road / Route 2A in Acton. \nThe Friends of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail (FBFRT) will be hosting a public information forum – “How Phase 2A of the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail got to the request for bids for construction milestone\, and what is expected to happen next”. \n If you live in a Phase 2A town (Acton\, Carlisle\, Westford) you will learn about the design process\, and what will be built. If you live in a Phase 2B\, 2C\, 2D town (Acton\, Concord or Sudbury) or any other community that has a MassDOT dormant railroad right-of-way\, you will pick up some lessons learned and will be much better informed on how the end game design process works for rail trails. \nThe forum is free. Light refreshments will be provided by the FBFRT. Look out for our ground-breaking event in the spring of 2015.
